    Chemical Constituent of Euclea schimperi
(Addis Ababa Universty, 1988-06) Tesfai zerom; Dagne Ermias (PhD)
There are two indegineous Euclea species in Ethiopia of a total of nearly 20 species of Euclea in the world all of which are restricted to tropical and subtropical Africa, Eucl80 schimJ?erU (family Ebenaceae), known in Amharic os Dedeho, is used in Ethiopia traditional medicine for the treatment of gonorrheae. The extract obtained from the root bark afforded seven naphthoquinones and two triterpenes, Five of the naphthoquinones are known compounds, these being 7-methyljuglone (N-i), neodiospyrin (N-2), 2-methylnaphthazarin (N-3), mamegokinone (N~4), and isodiospyrin (N-7). The other two naphthoquinones have not yet been structurally elucidated, The two triterpenes are lupeol (T-i) and unidentified triterpene (T-3), The extract from the stem-bark of g. schimperi yielded isodiospyrin (N-7), lupeol (T-i), and another unchar'lcterized triterpene (T-2). From previous phytochemical reports it appears that out of the known naphthoquinones isolated neodiospyrin (N-2) and 2-methylnaphthozarin (N-3) have not been reported before from any part of the plant. Furthermore, the occurrence of naodiospyrin (N-2) from the genus Euclea is reported here for the first time
