Item Assessment of Ethical Dilemmas in Covering Political Issues: EBC in Focus(Addis Ababa University, 2019-07) Gizachew, Yordanos; Terefe, Tenaw (Assistance professor)The study is all about assessing ethical dilemmas in political news reporting focusing on EBC. The main aim of the study is to assess ethical dilemmas in covering political issues focusing on Ethiopian broadcasting corporation (EBC.) The study questioned if the news on political issue were fair, impartial and balanced. The study Considered the ethical decision making process in relation with professional standards of journalism, i.e. accuracy, accountability, balance, fairness, objectivity and impartiality or other journalistic ethical norms. Social responsibility theory & framing theories were used as theoretical lens and other professional & ethics theory goes with the discussion in laying the foundation of the study. The research employed a combination of qualitative and quantitative research method i.e. the mixed way. The quantitative data collected & coded using a coding sheet, 57 were coded and analyzed using coding sheet & measurement. The qualitative data was collected through in-depth interview conducted with 6 key informants working at Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation. Using SPSS for the content analysis was employed. The finding shown as Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation was highly favoring the government agendas through source utilization and allocation of time and resources through a thorough coverage of government officials through exhaustive coverage of their meetings, press conferences & speech. The result of the study the stipulates government set the agenda for the interest of political propaganda the ethical issues also assessed on the basis of accuracy, fairness, balancing the stories objectivity and bias. The researcher recommends the station to draw a due attention in the allocation of time in the news for other responsible parts like the society or citizen as a source.Item Content Analysis of Coverage of Traffic Accident News: EBC in Focus(Addis Ababa University, 2018-11) Emana, Gelane; Terefe, Tenaw (Assistance professor)Traffic accident has increasingly become the recurrent problem in Ethiopia where thousands of people are being killed and properties amounting to multimillion birr are destroyed every year which lead to socio-economic crises of the citizens. Media, particularly state media such as EBC have the responsibility to play a vital role in overcoming this prevailing crisis. In this study, the role EBC played in terms of road traffic accident between 1st September 2017 & February 28, 2018. This research attempts to examine the role of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC)in combating traffic accident in Ethiopian. Specifically, the study explored the extent of coverage of road traffic accident in EBC‘s Amharic news. The study was conducted in content analysis procedure using coding sheet. EBC was purposively selected as a subject of the study. The combination of qualitative and quantitative methods were used as principal instruments of data collection.. In the study of the 6 mouth news672were actual192 news were selected and analyzed. In addition, in depth interview was conducted with reporters and editors who were purposely selected from EBC. Moreover, traffic Polices and Transport Officers were also interviewed. The result obtained both in analyzing the news and interviews demonstrated that emphasis given to traffic related accident by EBC is very minimum. For example out of 192 head line news only 17 were mentioned about traffic accident which is 8.9%. in depth interview made with different stakeholders also demonstrated that traffic accident issues get less attention by EBC. As per the content analysis and interviews, the extent of EBC road traffic accident converge was poor which cannot minimize the ever increasing road traffic accidents in Addis Ababa in particular and Ethiopia in general. Even from the least number of news broadcasted only few of them were broadcasted in the headlines and 8(47.1%) news were in the category of missing which demonstrate the less attention given by EBC in broadcasting the issues of road traffic accident. Relatively, more information was obtained from transport office and human resource on driving license. From all the accidents, fatal death was dominant as the incident was eight(47.1%) out of 17 cases. The duration taken for broadcasting road traffic accident news was relatively good as 8(47.1%) cases were broadcasted in 181-240 seconds which is said to be longer in terms of time allotted for broadcasting incidents. The frames were more thematic 12(70.5% cases which looks good in providing information to the public. Cause of more accidents was drink and driving which looks dangerous as a number of cars entering into the traffic system both from abroad and in the country. The source of more incidents was police inspector which in the researcher opinion should be improved such that all stakeholders need to have comparable responsibilities to report road traffic accidents.Item The Perceived Impact of Social Media on Mainstream Journalism Practices: The Case of Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation and Fana Broadcasting Corporate(Addis Ababa University, 2019-06) Milkessa, Bitima; Terefe, Tenaw (Assistance professor)The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Social Media on mainstream journalism practices focusing on Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) and Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC). Mixed research methods were adopted for the study where survey questionnaire and in-depth interview were used as specific methods for gathering the data. The explanatory sequential mixed methods was deployed to design the research. The data obtained and subsequent data analysis certainly emphasized the fact that social media has had, and continues to have a strong influence on the field of journalism and practitioners’. The notion of the journalist has moved so significantly away from aspects of its mainstream media basis because of favorability social media platform for interactivity with the audience and potential sources. A total sample of 283 journalists was randomly selected to fill the survey questionnaire. Whereas, 13 media professionals like media managers, editors and senior reporters were purposefully selected for the in-depth interview to support the findings from the questionnaire. As a result, the findings from these sources of data revealed that Journalists’ rated Social Media as very important in sourcing, processing, disseminating and getting feedback for local news. Similarly, Social Media have impacted on the mainstream journalistic practice to the level of creating new practices. Journalists used social media tools in their daily workflows, the access they each had to suitably reliable computing technologies remains an arguable issue within media organizations. Media organizations were converging and increasingly encouraging the use of social media in the daily work practices and routines of their employees. Both EBC and FBC directly linked to social media to broadcast online in addition to mainstreaming through Television and Radio. This indicates that the impact of internet technology on mainstream media. Unfortunately, both media institutions begun outlet their news with social media tools to attract audience worldwide. Therefore, it is recommended that proper training, attention and leadership needed both from the Media houses, journalists, researchers, educational institutions as well as policy makers.
