Item Participatotory Apprisal and Seroprevalence Study of Foot and Mouth Disease in Borana Pastoral System South Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University Faculty Of Veterinary Medicine, 2006) Rufael, Tesfaye; Ass.Prof Boga, AsscgedParticipatory appraisal and conventional veterinary investigation methods were applied to \alidate Barana pastoralists' knowledge on cattle disease and to investigate the epidemiology of Foot and Mouth disease ( Ft\lD), respe-ctivcly in Barana pastoral production system of Southern Ethiopia. Furthennore, detcnnin3ti oll of seroprevalencc of FMD and assessment of associated risk factors (including serotyping of the c irculating FMD vims) were conducted. The participatory methods used were clinical observation. matrix scoring, proportional piling. and seasonal calendars. Seroepldcmiological investigations were perfomlcd using JABC ELISA a nd liquid phase blocking ELISA techniques. The analysIs of matrix sconng showed good level of agreement (\\"- 0.569·0.956) among {he 12 mfomlant groups for the disease indicators. Slgnlficantl} higher herd seroprc\'alencc \\as recorded 111 Yabello dlstnct (61 ~o ). followed by DIITC (59% ) and ),loyale (52) districts. Similarly. Yabello district recorded the highest Fr.! D seropre\ alcnce (26.1° /0) on anll11al basis. From the various !"Isk factors analY/cd, Peasant AssoCIations (PAs). herd sizc=. sex and age were seen to be siglllficantly aSSOCiated (P <0.05) with the seroprevalcncc. Liquid phase blocking ELISA test revealed that '0' type F\lD \lnlS is the ll1Jjor serotype (99.2 % ) circulating in the area. follo\\ed by 'A' (95.8 % ). 'SAT 2 (Sn Oo ). and 'C" (6-.5u/o). .\ The results of 3 ABC ELISA and Pa sto rali sts' empirical knowledge of FMD showed a mod erate agreement (kappa=0.45), indicating that FMD is an important cattle disease in Borana pastoral production system 10 warrant the institution of appropriate cont rol strategy_
