Item Assessment Of Risk Management Practice In Addis Ababa City Administration Housing Development Project: The Case Of Addis Ababa City Saving Houses Development Enterprise (40/60 Schemes)(Addis Ababa University, 2018-06-07) Mohammed, Ali; markose, Solomon(PhD)This study tried to assess the practice of project risk management in Addis Ababa City Saving Houses Enterprise (AACSHE). The researcher has used descriptive research design. The data collection tools were questionnaire & semi structured interview. The sample size of the study was 40 individuals who were selected through purposive sampling. The response rate was 100%. The sample size was selected through purposive sampling and a questionnaires with an item of 49 was distributed to the team members and individuals who are involved with the projects. The findings of the study reveled that there is no well organized policy or guideline that recommend how to manage risks in the projects. The project doesn’t usually follows a defined or standard risk management process. Majority of respondents believed risk management is not treated as a continuous process in the project. The finding of the result showed irregularity as far as handling of uncertainties that occur within the project. Careful plan is not designed for the projects to overcome or handle uncertain events that may take place. Even though few respondents reported the Enterprise use of risk identification such as expert judgment, checklist, document review, information gathering, & assumption analysis, most of them disagree the existence of the practice of these method in the project. According to the respondents the majority source of risk in the project was human risk followed by technical and financial risks. Majority of respondent disagree the existence of well developed strategy to respond to uncertainties if they occur. The Enterprise lags behind in the practice of risk monitoring and control within the project. Furthermore, risk management culture is very low in the enterprise. Generally, the outcome of the research confirmed that risk management practice is implemented to some extent but there is a gap between the theory of project risk management which should be applied and the actual practice that is performed by the two condominium project sites. Therefore, possible recommendations are outlined at the end of this project work on what actions should be taken to improve the practice.Item An Assessment on the Practice and Problems of Training Materials in Addis Ababa Technical and Vocational Education and Training Colleges(Addis Ababa Universty, 2010-06) Mohammed, Ali; Oumer, Jeilu (PhD)The purpose of this thesis was to assess the practices and problems of Training Materials and facilities management in selected TVET colleges of Addis Ababa more specifically, the study was intended to improve the training and identify the potential constraints and the drawbacks encountered. To this end the study employed descriptive survey research method. Accordingly, questionnaire, interview guide and observational checklist were prepared, pilot-tested and administered to 196 sample respondents consisting of 94 trainers, 93 trainees, 3 deputy deans and 6 administrative staff A total of 187 (95.4% percent) filled and returned the questionnaire. In addition, interview was conducted with nine of them. Moreover, document analysis was used to supplement the data gathered through questionnaire and interview. Finally, the data gathered were analyzed using percentage, chi-square T-test as well as qualitative analysis. Finding from the data analysis revealed that significant majority of the trainers and trainees did not have any information about training materials and facilities management and availability of training materials management guideline. Furthermore, the data suggested that the machines were under utilized and were most of the time idle due to lack of skilled person in maintenance. In addition most of the trainers' knowledge and experience is related to theoretical part. Furthermore, the result indicated that training materials and facilities such as training hand tools, machines, teaching aids and reference books were inadequate. To alleviate the problems the following measures should be taken. Such as raising the awareness of the trainers and trainees, providing short term training to trainers in the area of training materials and facilities management and establishing partnership with donor organizations and improving the supply of training materials facilities to assist the smooth effective delivery of training and its best outcomes.Item Characterization and Use of Sewage Sludge Ash as Supplementary Cementitious Material for Concrete(Addis Ababa University, 2019-11) Mohammed, Ali; Shimelis, Kebede (PhD)Disposal of sewage sludge is becoming a serious environmental problem. The incineration process is able to reduce the volume of sewage sludge. It is not a proper solution, so the sewage sludge ash generated after the incineration process, and it must be disposed to landfill. The general objective of this study was to investigate the properties and use of sewage sludge ash as supplementary cementation material for concrete. Sewage sludge was incinerated at temperature of 600 ºC and 800 ºC for 3 & 2.5 hours. The incinerated sewage sludge ash was sieved through size of 75 µm and investigates physical properties, and chemical compositions of sewage sludge ash were carried out. SSA is pozzolanic material satisfied the requirement of ASTM C618. Chemical composition of SSA incinerated at 600 ºC and 800 ºC were determined by Atomic Absorption spectrometer. AAS test has shown that the sewage sludge ash contained primarily these oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and CaO. The concrete specimens were prepared using 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, and 20 % of the two temperatures incinerated sewage sludge ash that is 600 ºC and 800 ºC, and design mix ratio of 1:2:4 with w/c ratio was 0.82. The cubic mold size of 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm was used to produce a concrete specimen, and the concrete tests have then been measured both at the fresh and hardened concrete. In the hardened concrete, the results of a concrete have shown that 600 ºC SSA 5% & 800 ºC SSA 10% replacement of OPC by sewage sludge ash achieved a higher compressive strength than the others percentage of set in this research at the age of the 28 days as compared with the control concrete (0 % SSA). The percentage of water absorption increased with increase in sewage sludge ash that incinerated at temperature of 600 ºC & 800 ºC, and all the blended (% SSA) concretes have shown a higher amount of water absorbed as compared with the control concrete (0 % SSA).Item Investigation of Rotational Barrier in Nicotinamide and Picolinamide Using Temperature-Dependent 1H NMrR Spectra(Addis Ababa University, 2018-05-05) Mohammed, Ali; Redi, Mesfin (PhD); Tsegazab, Yisak (Mr)Rotational barrier in nicotinamide and picolinamide have been investigated employing temperature-dependent proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrometry. In nicotinamide and picolinamide the two protons on the nitrogen appeared at different chemical shift positions revealing that they are magnetically non-equivalent. In the experiments, nicotinamide showed two distinct peaks corresponding to the amine group of the amide molecule, and the peak separation decreased as a function of temperature indicating a rotational barrier about the amide bond. The coalescence of the two peaks was observed at 328 K. Using through line shape analysis of the temperature dependent spectra; a rotational barrier of 17.9 kcal mol −1was calculated. Interestingly the opposite temperature dependence of the peak separation was observed in picolinamide in which the separation increased as the temperature was increased and no convergence was observed in the temperature ranges the experiments were conducted. The observed behaviour clearly demonstrates that the splitting of the peaks cannot be attributed to the rotational barrier about the C−N bond rather it suggests that the two peaks originate from two different chromophores (O−H and =N−H chromophores) resulting from a tautomeric equilibrium.Item The Practice of Vocational Guidance And Counceling: The Missing Link Between Tvet and the Labour market (The case of Woliso Tvet College(Addis Ababauniversity, 2007-07) Mohammed, Ali; Kasaye, Woube(PhD)The:; main purpose of this tudy was to examine the cun'ent practice and to investigate the future expectation, ta ks and responsibilities of the vocational guidance and counseling unit by taking WoJiso Technical and Vocational Education and Training College as a particular case. To address cooperation between the unit and the employing organization, there has to be a planned and programmed commitment of the unit to take the initiative to motivate the manufactUling and service rendering organizations. Consolidated through exhibitions, workshops and panel discussions those illustrate the training and trainees profile. In addition, there has to be regular communication net work between the unit and the focus group both with in and outside the school to share information with regard training need and the labour market assessment. Since the regional government is the leading and responsible body of the sector, it is advisable to formulate compensatory directives that encourage employing organizations to take part in the situation and to allocate appropriate budget to effect the tasks and respon ibilities of the unitItem The Practice of vocational guidance and counseling: the missing link between Tvet and the Labour Market (the Case of Woliso Tvet College(Addis Ababa Universty, 2007-06) Mohammed, Ali; Kasaye, WoubeThe main purpose of this study was to examine the cun'ent practice and to investigate the future expectation, tasks and respon ibilities of the vocational guidance and counseling unit by taking Woliso Technical and Vocational Education and Training College as a particular case. More specifically, student’ and teachers’ attitudes towards 1 to 5 cooperative group learning (study program) and their views about the value of 1 to 5 cooperative group study program were assessed. Moreover, it was concerned with the implementation of 1 to 5 cooperative group learning tasks expected from students, teachers, and school principals for effectiveness of the program. Factors hindering effectiveness in implementation of 1 to 5 study program were examined. Three schools randomly were selected from the seven government secondary schools found in the sub city. 228 respondents chosen from these sample schools (180 students, and 45 teachers, and 3 principals) took part in the study. While the students and teachers were randomly, selected principals were purposively chosen due to their position and intimacy to manage and facilitate the overall activities in 1 to 5 cooperative group learning. Both quantitative (survey questionnaire) and qualitative data techniques (interviews)and quantitative and qualitative data were collected to attain the objectives The quantitative data were tabulated and presented in percentages, mean, and average mean of teacher and student respondent groups. The qualitative data were presented to complement the quantitative data. The findings indicate that teachers and students do not have favorable attitudes towards implementation of 1 to 5 cooperative group study program. However, it is viewed as moderately important. The study, however, indicated that there is a consensus among respondents that 1 to 5 cooperative group learning is poorly implemented. Unwillingness of teachers and students, poor coordination and large group size, and uncomfortable seating arrangements were mentioned factors highly influencing the effectiveness of the program. Moreover, understanding and training gaps, and lack of principals attention and reluctance of teachers to give feedback on time moderately affect its implementations. The overall recommendation of the study is that the government should give high emphasis and use ultimate efforts to shape the attitude of stakeholders towards 1 to 5 cooperative group study (learning) program. It was also recommended that further investigations should be conducted including other issues or tasks directly related with the program like teacher trainings on 1 to 5 CGL, access to essential resources
