Item An Investigation into the Reception of English Premier League Games by Ethiopian Youth in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2009-06) Mekonnen, Dereje; Hassen, Mohammed (PhD)In the midst of the broadcasting of football games particularly the English Premier League games in Ethiopia recently youth have been exposed to different kinds of foreign produced media products. It is obvious that Ethiopia, as part of the world-wide trend of influence brought about by globalization, is subject to a situation marked by the increased flow into the country and consumption by the local audience of foreign- produced media products. While at this time English Premier League games take lead in terms of consumption rates of foreign media products. This study, in particular, under the title of ‘’An Investigation into the Reception of English Premier League Games by Ethiopian Youth in Addis Ababa’’ is interested in investigating the web of meanings that arise from the viewing of English Premier League among Ethiopian youth. With this end in view, the study employed observation, focus group interviews, and individual in-depth interviews to gather the data needed to make sense of the youth’s viewing experience. The findings of the study show that youth in their interaction with media contents transmitted in settings far from theirs, actively interpret them in light of the subjective values, aspirations and concerns within their lives. What the youth’s own responses reveal is that the plurality of meanings they make when viewing English Premier League games represent a challenge to the premises of the media imperialism thesis, which put forward the homoginizating role of the Developed countries media in terms of propagating developed countries values and interests at the expense of the developing countries like Ethiopia. The concept of homogenization fails to accurately describe the consumption of foreign media messages by local audiences. The research also shows that the coming into the picture of such regional media as produced by nations like Great Britain raises the question whether media imperialism thesis is adequate in terms of explaining the overwhelmingly complicated global exchangeItem An Investigation into the Reception of English Premier League Games by Ethiopian Youth in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2009-06) Mekonnen, Dereje; Hassen, Mohammed (PhD)In the midst of the broadcasting of football games particularly the Engli sh Premier League games in Ethiopia recently youth have been exposed to different kinds of foreign produced media products. It focused on the relationship of employees understanding of the performance appraisal, the impacts of implementing performance appraisal on all stakeholders and the determinants of the relationship between RBPE pay system and employees’ understanding, motivation, feeling and fairness. a case study has been chosen as a proper research method for this study and used purposive sampling technique. The data collection was made through questionnaire and interview of employees’ in the organization of MOENCO using qualitative and quantitative method of research. Major findings of the research are interpreted and analysed in comparison with findings of existing literatures. The key findings of the research indicate positive fairness feelings and the related positive perceived work related behaviours of employees’ of MOENCO in addition to sound knowledge and understanding of RBPE pay system procedures and the perceived feelings of motivation by level of pay attached to PRP. In addition to positive relationship of fairness perception with work related behaviours, analysis of the research also revealed the possibility of negative influence of subjective performance measurement parameters on employees’ feelings of fairness. Finally, the study concludes that RBPE need further study and revision of the RBPE pay system to fill up the gaps mentioned above and minimizing negative impact to maximizing the strength of the relationship between the organization and employeesItem Satellite-Based Rainfall Estimation: Evaluation and Characterization (A Case Study Over Omo-Gibe River Basin)(Addis Ababa Universty, 2007-07) Mekonnen, Dereje; Murty, K.S.R. (PhD)Rainfall is a key climatic element considered as the most important factor that influencing the Ethiopian agriculture and it is also principal cause of droughts and flood triggered by the fluctuation and excess of rainfall extreme events respectively. It is known that the pattern and distribution of rainfall in Ethiopia is highly variable. Therefore, the understanding of such situations and integration of this knowledge into planning and decision making process is not doubtful. At present, the great amount of available rainfall data does not allow to a direct access by human user to the whole content of information. As D.Grimes, professor of reading university in UK, cited in the proceeding of meteorological satellite data users conference in 1997, the past 30 years there has been concern about decreasing rainfall in Africa and weather this is linked to climate change. He stressed that the problem of accurately assessing the situation are exacerbated by the sparseness of the raingauge network, which has meant difficult to determine it with out satellite applications. The development of remote sensing technology and application which are now able to manage the Satellite –based rainfall estimates by giving answer for specific complain such as - stations do not adequately reflect the various climatic zones of the country, unevenly distribution of Gauge Networking system, establishing dense network is not economically viable, accuracy and missing of gauge readings and records, and so on. Therefore, this problem can be alleviated only through the application of satellite data. The fact that satellite derived data is continuous in space and could be obtained regularly has made it very useful for early warning purposes. Most operational rainfall monitoring system in Africa including our country uses thermal infrared (TIR) imagery from MetoSat satellite. This is because of high repetitions rate of MetoSat images and the link between the rainfall and its convective source of clouds which is sensitive to TIR data. Half-hourly digital data from European Meteorological Satellite METEOSAT has been receiving at the National Meteorological Service agency since 1990.The study presented in this paper took place to investigate and show methods and practical application of satellite based rainfall estimates of TAMSAT methodology developed at the University of Reading, UK for tropical Africa. The data used are two types, dekadal MetoSat-TIR CCD image and ground gauge measurements represented the study area of Omo-Gibe basin. The CCD images are converted into RFE image through automated image processing module and values are extracted at delineated homogeneous rainfall region (HRR). The extracted rainfall values obtained are further processed and characterized quantitatively using statistical and GIS Geostatistical tools, indicated that reasonable agreement and in small extent variability between the satellite estimate and gauge value.Item Woody Species Composition of Dilfaqar Regional Park and Its Socioeconomic Importance(Addis Ababa University, 2006-09) Mekonnen, Dereje; Woldemariam, Tadesse (PhD)This Study was conducted in Dilfaqar Regional Park which is found in Doddota-Sire District, Arsi zone, Oromia Regional State with the aims to identify, describe the vegetation type, species diversity, as well as the importance and impacts of socioeconomic activities of the local people. Collection of vegetation data was made using systematic sampling methods, laying four transects and 41 plots. Plant specimens collected from field were identified at the National Herbarium of Addis Ababa University. Socio– economic data was collected through formal and informal discussion based on PRA techniques and semi-structured questionnaires. Vegetation data were analyzed using PCORD computer software, whereas socio-economic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The vegetation in the study area was sparsely distributed, and only 39 woody species representing 24 families were recorded. The most dominant species of the vegetation in Dilfaqar Regional Park were acacia species; as a result vegetation of the study area can be categorized under White (1983) as Somalia Massai Center of Endemism. Classification of the vegetation data resulted in four plant communities. The density of woody species was 1734ha-1. Beside this, the Shannon diversity index value was 2.877 and the evenness value was 0.785. Currently Dilfaqar is recognized as one of the Regional Parks within Oromia Regional State, where many numbers of wild animal made the enclosed area their habitat and rejuvenization of flora observed. About 95% of the interviewed member of the local communities had positive attitude toward enclosure of the area as park. But, some landless householder consider enclosure of Dilfaqar as Regional park as the reason for the limited access for grazing and farm land. More over the elder member of the local community were highly aware of the relationship between rehabilitation of forest and climatic change such as intensity of rain. The visibility of wildlife and interest of the local people due to grass for house covering they obtain, will ascertain the survival of the park. Since the area is highly degraded for along period of time as a result the conservation activities of Dilfaqar Regional Park should involve the collaboration of government, non governmental organizations as well as the local communities to enhance eco-tourism, rehabilitation and sustainable utilization of the resources in the study area.
