And a s rvey was conducted by taking r andom sampl es of 410 graduating students and 80 instructors from t h e TTls at Dessie, Gonder, Awassa, and Nazareth . With a response rate of 75 percent, the data collected were analyse~ by utilizing appropriate statistical methods from which the following results were obtained; Statements of the overall objectives that focus on the development of prospective teachers' competencies and their ability to promote "community development" were regarded as highly relevant and important to the professional training; and t hat objective whi ch proposes "ideological training" was considered as least. import.ant. _ The professional preparation was rated as "more than adeqLtate" ~ by b t•_, groups of respondents, in the skills of "planning", "pre-sentation" and •!e• ... a~uation•, of classroom lessons; and the prepar at 1. on was rated as " inadequate" in dea:ing with "classroom management" skills; no significant difference was observed between the two groups, expect. in the area of "evaILlation" skills . - Some background characteristlcs of the respondents sho~ed a significan~ re:ationshi~ with the1.r rati ng of the erFcfess:.ional traini;fg: stwGer,ts with more pre-traini ng work (t=:.::-h:;f~) " e ;::, e~le~,ce," and those r,it:-f higT-. And a survey was conducted by taking random samples of 410 graduating students and 80 instructors from the TTls at Dessie, Gonder, Awassa, and Nazareth . With a response rate of 75 percent, the data collected were analyzed by utilizing appropriate statistical methods from which the following results were obtained; Statements of the overall objectives that focus on the development of prospective teachers' competencies and their ability to promote "community development" were regarded as highly relevant and important to the professional training; and t hat objective which proposes "ideological training" was considered as least important. The professional preparation was rated as "more than adequate" ~ by both groups of respondents, in the skills of "planning", "presentation" and ''evaluation'', of classroom lessons; and the preparation was rated as " inadequate" in dealing with "classroom management" skills; no significant difference was observed between the two groups, expect. in the area of "evaluation" skills. -Some background characteristics of the respondents showed a significant relationship with their rating of the professional training: students with more pre-training work (teaching) " experience," and those with high "tendency" to drop out of teaching are less optimistic in their rating; and teachers with more "years of service" in the TTls rated the training more positively; the "worth of the feedback" students received in the practice teaching period was also significantly and positively related with their rating . Based on these results, some recommendations are made: TTIs should formulate trainable objectives that are sensitive to the professional needs of trainees; systematic training in professional skills should be provided; research on teaching and teacher education practices should be encouraged in the TTIs; the teaching practice program should have a definite objective; and closer cooperation between the TTls and the Elementary schools should be maintained.Item Opportunities and Challenges of Urban Public Transportation System in the case of Anbessa City Bus Service Enterprise in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa Univerisity, 2011-07) Girma, Mulugeta; Paul, Issac(PhD)This study accesses the opportu ni ties and challenges of urban public transportation system in the case of Anbessa city buses in Addis Ababa .The study was cond ucted on ACBSE since it is the on ly publ ic transport service provider with a specific route of travel and governed by the state. The study has la llowed a case study app roach so as to get detail ed and diverse information on the enterprise. 80th primary and secondary so urces were used in gathering data for the study. Sources of primary data incl udcs Qucstionnairc for Anbessa city buses usc rs , Semi-structurcd inte rvicw with oflic ials of ACBSE and AATA , Focus Group Discussion and personal observat ion .Seeondary data so urces were published and un publi shed materials, journals, art icles and bulletin prepared by ACBSE and other concerned bodies. Besides the study employed systematic and random sampling methods to se lect the number of ro utes and sample respondents (use rs) from each se lected ro utes, respecti vely. Purposive sampling was a lso used to se lect key informants for discussion while conducting inte rview and FGD .The study resu lts indicate that role connict in the enterpri se, di sposal of scrap ve hicles and obsolete spare parts, high staff turnover , low Ileet re liabil ity, poor in frastructure and fac ili ties , lack of public transport pol icy , lack of appro priate regulation and enfo rcement ,over loading of buses beyond its capacity and long duration o f buses at the garage due to shortage of spare parts were the major chall enges that hinder smooth ii.metioning of the enterprise in delivering publi c transport serv ices in the city. Even if there were constra ints related to the above mentioned challenges, Anbessa has also some opportuni ties in public transportation system. Some of th e opportu nities were on passengers transported , transport cost , congestion , road sa fety, environmental pollution , bus network and it also provides the fo llowing services to thc society: contract transport service , adverti sement , mobil e crane service, schoo l bus se rvice and techni cal services. I' ina ll y, based on the res ults of the study the enterpri se should improve the level services by so lving the above mentioned problems in colla bo ration with the government and other concern ed bodies. Furthermore, the Government should give great attention to the enterpri se to improve publ ic transport services in the city especially by ta king advantages of the opportuniti es that mentioned in the above.
