Item An Assessment of Audience Satisfaction With Addis Television: The Case of Youths’ Program(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06) Mengiste, Kassahun; Gebru, Amanuel (Asst. professor)The central focus of this study was to assess the satisfaction of audiences with Addis Television youths’ program. The study tried to see the extent to which the program gratifies youths and for what reasons or purposes that they watch the program. Moreover, the study also attempted to examine the content and presentation of youths’ program and know whether the preferences of the youths’are exactly addressed or met. To generate appropriate data for the study purposive or judgment sampling technique and questionnaires and semi-structured interview were used. The researcher believed that this deliberate selection of participants was helpful to get the right viewers of the program as the preliminary study that indicates the expected result on the study. This was done with the collaboration of the youths’ main office and sub cities associations’ leaders. This was done by using Snowball sampling that used a small pool of youth initial informants to nominate, through their social networks, other participants who meet the eligibility criteria and could potentially contribute to a specific study. Before administration of the actual questionnaire, pilot survey was made on the four selected sub cities using 30 purposively selected audiences. Based on the results of pilot study, the actual questionnaires were distributed to 300 respondents; individual semi-structured interview was also made with twenty participants, a producer and an editor of the program. After the researcher collected all the data using the designed questionnaires and semi-structured interview from the selected samples, he brought them together and placed the responses into percentage and made analysis. Moreover, the results of the study were examined in contrast to the objectives of the research. The findings of the data showed that Addis television youths’ program audiences watch the program for different reasons. Many of the respondents could not get credible information, and learn about things in the world from it. But, they were watching it because of their habit. Therefore, the overall results of this study show that audience satisfaction of the program was very poor. Based on the findings, recommendations are suggested on how to improve the program to gratify the audiences.Item An Evaluation of Learners’ Competence in Delexicalised Verbs; the Case of Kotebe College of Teacher Education(Addis Ababa University, 2007-07) Aredo, Mesfin; Gebru, Amanuel (Asst. professor)The purpose of this study was to evaluate students’ competence and awareness on delexicalised verbs. In the study I tried to assess teachers’ views and awareness on these verbs. Descriptive study was used to carry out this study. Purposeful and random sampling was used to select 153 students to tests and three instructors to interviews from Kotebe College of Teacher Education. Data were gathered using both qualitative and quantitative methods through interviews and tests. The data were tabulated. And, percentiles method was implemented in analyzing the data. The finding of the study revealed that the students’ competence on delexicalised verbs is low. The instructors also disclosed that they hadn’t made much attention on these verbs. Thus it is recommended that instructors should play role in guiding their students to study delexicalised verbs and maximizing input opportunities for their learners.Item Perception and Classroom Practice of Communicative Language Teaching By High School Efl Teachers and Learners: The Case of Some Selected High Schools in Addis Ababa(Addis Ababa University, 2008-06) Gebru, Beyene; Gebru, Amanuel (Asst. professor)The main purposes of this study were to explore high school EFL teachers’ and learners’ perception of CLT and to examine the degree they practice the CLT principles in their entire classes in Ethiopian High School context. The data were collected through questionnaires (for both teacher and learner), classroom observation, and interviews (for both teachers and learners). A questionnaire (consisting of seven thematic groups) of 75 items for 26 teachers and of 47 items for 100 learners (who were randomly selected from three government high schools); classroom observations on 10 teachers and interview with 10 teachers and 15 learners(out of the whole subjects of the questionnaires) were administered in March and April 2008 . The overall findings of this study showed that the majority of teachers (80.41 %) and more than half (62.33 %) of learners under the study had mildly high levels of perception about CLT tenets. However, the study conversely reveals that there is a clear mismatch between what teachers and learners perceive about CLT and what they actually practice in EFL context
