Item Information Support System for Maternal and Child Healthcare(Addis Ababa University, 2016-06) Kaba Oli; Bekele RahelUsing information technology to reach mothers directly with health information customized to their stage of pregnancy.Mobile phones applications are able to quickly and easily disseminate information that will inform women of ways to care for themselves during pregnancy, dismiss tradition and misconceptions, highlight warning signs, connect women with local health services, reinforce breast feeding practices, explain the benefits of family planning, and make new mothers aware of how best to care for their babies. The aim of this project is to design information support system for maternal and childcare, to identify the current sources of maternal and child healthcare information and the need for a mobile based system, to design a prototype mobile application platform for providing maternal child healthcare information. A software development life cycle (SDLC) methodology of object-oriented approach applied to the study of the design system. Interview and document review were used as a main tool to capture the system requirement along with observation. Unified Modeling Language (UML)development techniques applied in the process of requirements capture, modeling, system analysis and design. SPSS and Visio Software were employed in analysis and design models diagramming. The results of this study show that an expectant women currently access maternal and child healthcare information from the media, brochure (or information sheet), Health extension workers (HEWs) and Health Development Army (HAD). The women in each development group are clustered in one of five networks. In developed countries, mobile phones are widely used to provide maternal and child healthcare information through mobile applications. Accessing maternal and child healthcare information directly to by expectant women and new mothers is an innovative way to empower women to take action to improve their own health and the health of their children and families. The researcher recommends the implementation of the design by Partnerships with health professionals , hospitals and healthcare NGO's to ensure the maternal and child healthcare information they provide, antenatal care clinic , health events and more can be informed the target population by means of mobile applications.Item Information Technology Application in Institutions of Higher Learning in Ethiopia with Special Reference to Computer Applications.(Addis Ababa University, 1992-06) Bekele Rahel; Neelameghan A. (Professor)Every society and individual need information in the performance of its day to day tasks. Timely, reliable and pertinent information is required to be presented in a form and format convenient to the potential user(s). Information is needed for gainful decision making, effective and efficient - planning and management and increasing productivity in all sectors and all walks of life; it is needed to support education at all levels, to enhance the quality of life and to ,create an informed citizenry to sustain democracy. In this regard computers are becoming increasingly more efficient and effective tools for the processing, storing, and retrieving and delivery of information in various fields of human Endeavour. Developments in information technology, in which computer technology is the principal core, provide a unique opportunity for developing countries to accelerate their socio economic development. However, there are constraints and difficulties that hinder the acquisition, maintenance and effective application of the technology. The present study surveyed through questionnaires, interviews, and site visits the current level of application of computers in Institutions of Higher Learning in Ethiopia. The situation is not satisfactory as a whole. The study indicated that some institutions do not have any computer facilities at all, while those that have encounter problems in their use. The problems relate to capacity, compatibility, and maintenance of hardware, the software used, and the quality and number of trained personnel available for the proper handling of computers and information systems. There are also organizational problems and administrative constraints. Based on the findings of the study, the following principal recommendations are offered : Institutions should be encouraged to treat the acquisition of computers as an investment supported by clear-cut definition of computer needs, and technical and economic evaluations. Open access to staff, with proper security like pass words, may hasten the development of experience with Under Higher Education, various training institutions should be established and appropriate courses given in order to promote education and training in computer technology computers The establishment of a higher body at the national level to promote cooperation in computer technology in institutions of higher learning in Ethiopia should be considered. The body's functions will be to promote and guide the development of computer related resources and their application in order to anticipate and meet the future needs of Higher Learning Institutions. Additionally, the body can help in mediating and catalyzing exchange of ideas and information among institutions within and outside the country. :Item Mobile Based Emergency Reporting System for Infectious Disease Surveillance.(Addis Ababa University, 2015-06) Ahmed Harif; Bekele RahelQuick detection and response to emergency infectious disease is crucial. However ,manual paper based reporting and reporting system has many shortcomings such as inability to report emergency infectious disease on time and the possibility of errors that can be committed during data entry. The research project therefor ,aimed to design mobile based emergency reporting for infectious disease Surveillance report system for Oromia regional health bureau in order to improve the use of mobile based reporting for infectious disease Surveillance for making sound detection and alert response to prevent and to control communicable diseases.Item Requirement Analysis and System Design for Voice Messages for Antenatal and Postnatal Care Services.(Addis Abeba University, 2014-06) Adane Hiwot; Bekele Rahel; Fantahun MesganawIn Ethiopia maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality are the major health problems. Some of the causes are delay in seeking and receiving skilled care, home delivery/ low utilization of service, lack of recognition of newborn danger signs and low levels of care seeking for new born at health facilities. This project is therefore designed to contribute to the decrement of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by sending voice messages instead of Simple Message System (SMS) directly to mothers. The system reminds mothers‟ appointment and makes them aware about the danger signs that can occur during pregnancy and postpartum period both in mother and in baby. The general objective of this project is to prepare content and requirement analysis and system design for the development of voice messages for antenatal and postnatal care services. Review of already existing mobile phone for MNCH which was developed by Clinton Health Access Initiatives (CHAI) and Addis Ababa University (AAU) and World Bank and Addis Ababa University (AAU) were made. Interview of a professional who was involved in the development of those systems was also conducted to develop user requirements. Different literatures, protocols, fact sheets, brochures and standard manuals were reviewed to develop messages both in Amharic and English in which are going to be sent to mothers/families mobile phone. The health information messages organized for each trimester and postpartum weeks .After the pregnant mother is enrolled in the system she get health information messages every two week until delivery and during postpartum period every week until fourth week. The appointment reminder messages delivery to the mother based on the World Health Organization (WHO) Focused Antenatal Care (FANC) and postnatal care schedule.Item Role of Internal Control Systems on Performance of Ethiopian Shipping and Logistics Services Enterprise .(Addis Ababa University, 2017-01) Bekele Rahel; Birhanu HabtamuEffective internal control system can play a very crucial role in every organization to realize organizational goals, one of which is achieving financial performance objectives. The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact of internal control systems on financial performance on Ethiopian shipping and Logistics Services Enterprises as a case study. The study used explanatory research design research design by using both descriptive and quantitative methods where primary data is collected using Likert-scale questionnaires distributed and interviews made with employees in the finance department. Secondary data was gathered from company's financial statements and publications. The dependent variable was financial performance measured in-terms of profitability and ROA. The predictors or independent variables were the five elements of internal control system, control environment, control activities, risk assessment, monitoring and information and communication. The target population was 40 employees in the finance department and census design was adopted. The study period covers 9 years 2005-2013. Effectiveness of the elements of internal control system was analyzed from the descriptive statistics result. Multiple regression analysis was done to determine the relationship and the significance level of elements of internal control system towards financial performance. The result revealed that internal control system contributed only31% variation on financial performance. The descriptive result shows there is weak internal control system in the organization. The study recommend more commitment by the management in monitoring internal control system and continue working on improving for the effectiveness of the internal control system so, the company will achieve better performance
