Item Assessment of Success Factors in Development Projects in the Case of Energizing Development (Endev) Ethiopia(A.A.U, 2021-05) Assefa, Ashenafi; Mitiku, Meskerem (PhD)Researchers have identified various success factors that determine the success of projects at different times and most conclusions are that no standard prescription works for all projects. Factors may depend on the nature of the project and the environmental and cultural aspects in which the project is implemented. The objective of this study was to assess the success factors of development projects and analyze their level of contribution to the success of the project in the implementation phase of the project life cycle by taking the case of Energizing Development (EnDev) Ethiopia. The Programme has been running since 2009 and a significant amount of fund has been spent to achieve its objectives. Evidence show that the project is not achieving its target and there are cost and budget overruns as well as changes in the scope of the project during implementation. The research used descriptive research design and applied primary data for the conduct of the research. These data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Success factors identified and tested in this study were the level of top management commitment, stakeholders and partners engagement, the competency of project staff, project communication, and availability of fund and their effect on the success of the project. These success factors have been identified to be tested because they are the widely recognized and accepted success factors according to Pinto and Slevin (1987), Khange and Moe’s (2008) and ofOori (2013) and relate closely to the peculiar characteristics of development projects. Accordingly, the results indicated that the commitment of top management, competency of staff, and the availability of fund are currently practiced in a good manner and contributing to the success of the project whereas the project has a lot to improve in the engagement of stakeholders and partners as well as internal and external communications in the implementation of the project. The study recommended that strategies need to be designed and implemented on engaging stakeholders and partners as well as improving the communication culture of the project.Item Critical Evaluation of Process and Marketing Management of Addis Ababa SPA Services (Addis Ababa Filwoha)(A.A.U, 2007-08) Assefa, Ashenafi; Shibre, Zewdie (Dr)Addis Ababa Filwoha, one of a long established service providing firm in the country Observations and a well deigned questionnaire are employed, to do so Customers find few thing as per their expectation. The price is affordable & information is provided about facility location, though only in Amharic .the customers like to use the shower service & they are satisfied with the quality of the soap. The outstanding problem is the long waiting hours. There IS a noticeable service inconsistency. Toilettes are not available in all rooms. The existing ones are not in proper condition. Waiting customers are left with out entertaining things, there is even lack of chairs. The service consistency is also evident in cleaning the rooms, towels, treating customers, room conditions. For all these customers are ready to switch to another service provider the moment one is availableItem The Impact of Trade on Poverty in Ethiopia: A Sequential Dynamic Computable General Equilibrium Micro Simulation Analysis(A.A.U, 2012-06) Assefa, Ashenafi; Ferede, Tadele(Dr.)This study tries to address the impact of trade on poverty by way of agricultural total factor Productivity (FFP). In doing so, we employ a Sequential Dynamic Commutable General Equilibrium Model linked to a Micro Simulation Model. We also used econometric model to Estimate the agricultural TFP of Ethiopia. For these purpose, we utilized the data of the 2005/06 SAM of EDRI (Ethiopian Development Research Institute), the 2004/05 HICE (Household Income Consumption Expenditure) survey conducted by CSA (Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia), different years of agricultural sample surveys of CSA and the ITC UNCTAD data. The estimation results of this study shows that trade openness and fertilizer application have Positive impact on agricultural TFP. But seeds, irrigation and extension have negative impact on Agricultural TFP. We also found that the proposed tariff cut, trade induced agricultural TFP and improved agricultural TFP due the application of fertilizer results in an increment in all Macroeconomic variables. However, poverty due to trade openness and tariff reduction Exacerbate poverty during the simulation period.Item The Practice of Direct And Indirect Instructional Strategies: The Case of Lecture And Discussion Methods In Addis Ababa University(Addis Ababauniversity, 2002-05) Assefa, Ashenafi; Engida, Temechegn (PhD)The purpose of this study was to assess to what extent lecture and/or discussion method of teaching is used in AAU. Lecture and discussion method of teaching are used as indicators of direct and indirect instructional strategies respectively. The study also examined the factors that most influence the selection and utilization of instructional methods. Moreover, the influence of level of qualification, academic rank, and pedagogical knowledge of instructors in the process of instructional method selection and utilization was also surveyed. To effectuate this, descriptive survey was employed. A sample of 97 male and 19 female instructors of AAU in the SSC, ILS, FOE, FOL, FBE, and SISA was randomly selected. And 20 available classrooms with minimum number of forty and above were observed. In addition to observing the teaching-learning process in twenty selected classrooms with the help of checklist, a questionnaire constructed in terms of open and close-ended items, rating and Likert scale were employed in the process of data gathering. The data gathered via questionnaire and observation checklist were analyzed using the simple percentile, weight mean rank, and chi-square statistics. The analysis revealed that lecture and discussion are among the widely used instructional methods in the SSC, ILS, FOE, FOL, FBE, and SISA of AAU. Lecture in isolation, and lecture in combination with other methods of teaching were frequently used in comparison with lecture and discussion together, discussion in isolation, and discussion with other method of teaching. Besides, lecture and discussion together, lecture together with other method of teaching, and discussion with other method of teaching was used in comparable manner. On top of this, instructors do not perceive level of qualification as influential factor in the process of instructional method selection and utilization, though the statistical analysis indicated the other way. Academic rank was perceived as a contributing factor in the process of instructional method selection and utilization. Conversely, however, the statistical analysis didn't tell so. The pedagogical exposure of instructors found to be an influential factor in the process of instructional method selection and utilization; however, the majority of AAU instructors in the above specified disciplines except FOE have no pedagogical Knowledge either via preor in-service training
