Item The Effects of Monitoring and Evaluation on Project Success in Ethiopian Sugar Development Projects :The Case of Fincha’a Sugar Expansion Project(Addis Ababa University, 2022-06) Abayneh Lakew; Dakito Alemu (PhD)The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of monitoring and evaluation on project success in Ethiopian sugar development projects for the case of Fincha’a Sugar Expansion Project. The study employed descriptive research design and Data were gathered from both primary and secondary sources. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 47 respondents and collected from 39 samples of respondents by using multi-stage sampling procedures involving purposive, convenience and simple random sampling techniques. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics with SPSS version 26. Correlation analysis assessed the relationship between challenges of monitoring and evaluation and project success whereas multiple regression analysis assessed the effects of monitoring and evaluation challenges on project success. The descriptive results indicated that institutionalizing monitoring and evaluation system, linking monitoring and evaluation to objectives, data management of monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholders’ engagement in monitoring and evaluation are the main challenges to effective monitoring and evaluation in Fincha’a Sugar expansion project. The finding also revealed that two predictor variables, namely, linking monitoring and evaluation to objectives, and data management of monitoring and evaluation had a positive statistical significant effect on project success. The role of institutionalizing monitoring and evaluation system, linking monitoring and evaluation to objectives, data management of monitoring and evaluation, and stakeholders’ engagement leaves only 20.9% unexplained. The researcher suggests that there is a need to evaluate other factors that contribute to project success. The p - value of 0.000 (less than 0.05) implies that the model of monitoring and evaluation challenges affecting project success is significant at the 99% confidence level. The researcher also suggests that linking monitoring and evaluation to objectives should be given due recognition for the role it plays in ensuring the success of projects.
