Abstract

The pUipose of this study was to investigate the general conditions encountered by students/trainees in their transition from school to work in selected industrial occupational fields of studies. The research technique used in this study was basically a descriptive survey method. To execute the study three TVETs colleges out of seven were selected on the basis of purposive sampling techniques found in Addis Ababa. The three deans, six vice deans, twelve section heads, three vocational guidance and counselors, 121 trainers and 306 of the trainees were included in the sample by using simple random sampling techniques. Using a mixed method of data gathering, questionnaires to collect quantitative data and qualitative data from the participants in the form of open- ended interview questions and findings were reviewed by using the chi-square test methods. The result of the study depicted that TVET program lacks adequately trained instructors, inadequate workshops and facilities. 1n addition, TVET colleges were unable to establish a network of co-operative relationships with stake holders, lack of confidence on trainees in getting a job lie at the heart of the issues. Similarly, TVET colleges were unable to conduct research-based preparation of TVET curriculum and hire qualified vocational guidance counselors. Thus, in general TVET program suffers from lack of capacity building of administrative staffs and financial cons/rai."t (budget) as well as provision of raw materials difficulties. On the other hand, majority of students have not hesitated to indicate the relevant knowledge and skills they have acquired from their respective trainings. Finally, the finding of the study also suggest a clear benefit to the sector of additional guide lines and strategies are jointly laid down by Federal Educational Organizations, in alliance with Regional, Zonal, Wareda level, and all other stake holders in the educational arena. Especially in establishing strong and consistent liaison between the trainees and the world of work, financial factors have gained a significant importance.
