Abstract

The main objective of the study is to assess the role of leadership in addressing the public transport management problems of Addis Ababa City. The target population of the research is employees (leaders and non-leaders) and customers of Addis Ababa Transport Bureau and based on Krejcie & Morgan table the sample size is 269 employees (12 leaders and 257 non-leaders) and 159 customers. The researcher used quantitative research approach, descriptive research design and cross-sectional research method to conduct the study. The source of data employed to conduct the research is primary and secondary data. The data collection tool employed for the research is questionnaire based on Likert scale. As the study has two independent variables (transformational leadership and transactional leadership) related to leadership and multiple dependent variables related to urban public transport management problems (economic growth, efficiency and effectiveness; health safety and security; access and mobility; environmental responsibility; livability connectivity and amenity; and other urban public transport management issues), the researcher used multivariate regression model and descriptive statistics to analyse data with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).Given the above, the findings of the research based on descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis showed that urban public transport management problems are affected by transformational and transactional leadership from leaders, non-leaders and customers. In addition, both descriptive and multivariate results from leaders showed that transformational and transactional leadership have significant role in addressing urban public transport management problems. On the other hand, the same analysis from the non-leaders and customers showed that the leadership is not playing significant role in addressing urban public transportation management problems of the city. Last but not least, the researcher recommends that the organization in general and the leaders of AATB in particular should engage themselves in institutional and administrative capacity building and on policy and operational matters to address the complex and dynamic urban public transport management problems in Addis Ababa city which have far reaching impact on improving the livelihood of residents and economic performance of the city in particular and the country at large
