Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic non-communicable disease with considerable
impact on health status and quality of life. It can have a profound effect on quality of life in terms
of social and psychological well-being as well as physical ill-health.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess health related quality of life and its associated
factors among Type 2 diabetic patients attending in Felege Hiwot Referral Hospital.
Methods: Institutional based cross-sectional study design with both quantitative and qualitative
method was conducted April 15 to May 15, 2015. Structured and validated questionnaire was
adapted from WHOQOL-BREF for collecting quantitative data and systematic sampling
technique was used to select 344 participants while in-depth interview were conducted on eight
Participants for qualitative study. SPSS Statistics Version 20 was used, the data was summarized,
organized in tables, graphs and described with percentage and mean scores. Simple and multiple
linear regressions analysis was used to see the association between dependent and independent
variables and the result was presented by using p-value <0.05, as a cut of point.
Results: A total of 344 type II diabetes patients were involved in the study with the response rate
of 100% (344). Among the total respondents, majority of them 197 (53.3%) were male and more
than 30% of them were >47 years old, with a mean age of 40.54+15.208. Age, educational status,
income, marital status, occupation, presence of diabetic related Complications had a positive &
statistically significant association with health related quality of life (HRQOL). While gender,
drug regimen and duration with diabetic mellitus(DM) illness were not found to be statistically
significant predictors of Health related quality of life.
Conclusions: The overall health related quality of life was lower in older patients. Patients with
lower educational status had poor QOL than well educated once. Unemployed DM patients had
low quality of life than employed. As income increases health related quality of life (HRQOL) of
Patient would likely increase.
Recommendations: Health care team for diabetics should not be only disease-centered; QOL
should regularly assessed and improved accordingly, Special attention should be given to DM
patients to create job opportunities, further research need to be conducted by including large
sample size.
