Abstract
The overall objective of this study was to investigate major factors associated with
contraceptive use among married Zay community members. The study involves 179(91 male
and 88 female) randomly selected married men and women from two Island settlers, two
Kebeles, and two towns where the community settles.
Analysis of the data collected was made using quantitative analysis: percentile, Chi-Square,
One Way ANOVA, Inter-correlations, and Stepwise regression analysis. Results of the
analysis indicated that except sex, all variables (residence, religious attendance, educational
level, age at first marriage, age of respondents and number of living children) were
significantly associated with contraceptive use. Besides, there is significant difference
between contraceptive users and non users on value of children, couples communication,
concepts toward contraceptives and perception towards family planning counseling.
Furthermore, analysis of the stepwise regression revealed that residential place, couples
communication, age of marriage, distance in kilo meter to get the service, and educational
level were the most powerful predictors of contraceptive use.
Implication of this study is that concerned organizations both governmental and
nongovernmental organizations should involve providing contraceptives and related family
planning services in community based manner. Besides, expanding education will enhance
couples communication and reduce early marriage in the community.
