Abstract
This study examines the factors that influence language skills in the learning of French as a foreign language and French for specific purposes (FLE/FOS) among students at the Tourism Training Institute (IFT). French plays a key role in the hospitality and tourism sector in Ethiopia.
Teachers and students were included in this study to collect research data. The research data were gathered from 26 informants through in-depth interviews, using a purposive sampling technique. The qualitative data collected during these interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis with NVivo software.
Additionally, the researcher employed participative observation to gather primary data and clearly analyze the difficulties faced by students in their French learning process. The data collected through participative observation were analyzed via discourse and text analysis.
According to the research analysis, several factors were explored, such as pedagogical factors, methodological factors, factors related to limited academic resources, and finally, environmental educational factors, which are the most common in the Tourism Training Institute.
In addition to these challenges, the study explores several solutions. In this context, solutions such as using innovative, interactive approaches and diversified methods could address many of the institute’s challenges. Moreover, integrating useful resources like a language laboratory, establishing a language club, and forming partnerships with French institutions could help reduce many of the institute’s challenges.
