Abstract

Survey on knowledge, attitude and practices that communities have on medicinal plants in Debre Birhan and surrounding areas Zebene Abebe Addis Ababa University, 2017 The study is a survey on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) on medicinal plants of people in Debre Birhan town and surrounding area, north Shewa zone, Amhara region, in Ethiopia. A total of 198 informants (male 78 and female 120) (ageā‰„18) were selected by simple random sampling employed to collect information on medicinal plant use from three kebeles (3, 6 and 9). The kebeles selected by systematic random sampling from Debre Birhan town and one kebele (Debele) from the surrounding area selected purposely. Semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were employed to collect data. Quantitative approaches were used to determine informant consensus factor (ICF) and fidelity level (FL) values. A total of 64 plant species in 62 genera and 40 families were recorded to have medicinal values for 45 different human health problems. For each plant species local name (Amharic) and scientific name documented. Plant parts used, method of preparation and application and routes of administration were also documented. Majority of medicinal plant species in the study area were obtained from market (23.44 %).Herbs were found to be the most widely used (46.88%) followed by shrub species (34.38%).The most frequently used plant part were leaves (36.9%) followed by roots. The most widely used root of administration is oral followed by dermal. The knowledge, attitude and practice on large number of medicinal plants by people of Debre Birhan and surrounding area shows that indigenous people of the study area still depend on traditional medicine of plant origin. Few people fear to use medicinal plants. Because they think that the dosage of traditional medicine is unknown and few traditional healers mix the medicine with religious and evil spirite
