Abstract
Women participation in all spheres of l~fe ha become significant. The presence of a
high number of women a instructors in the higher education institutions would play
an important ro/e in the efforts to promote the education of women in Ethiopia. One
major rea on i that it is at the higher echelons where important decisions related to
(he why what and how of education are made. Women need to be present in these
in titutions to voice the needs and different educational programs that would affect
the participation, success and outcome of women. Currently however few Ethiopian
women posse the e attribute' and very Jew are represented as instructors in
government univer •ities. Hence, lhis sludy is meanl 10 understand the myriad Jactors
that affect the low representation of women in government universities of Ethiopia
with particular reference to Addis Ababa University, Bahirdar University and
Haramaya University. To examine the major constraints that entangled women
during recruitment and promotion, a total of 246 academic. •tafr. where 56 were
women faculty, 22 administrators including Deans, Human resources department
officers and 360 student subjects were selected through simple random sampling,
purposive sampling, cluster random sampling and stratified random sampling
techniques as the case requires. The study used qualitative and quantitative methods.
Questionnaires and interview Items were used togather data from the subjects.
The data was analyzed mainly qualitatively and by descriptive stati tics using
(frequencies and percentages). The findings show that there are small number of
women faculty in the selected faculties and departments of Addis Ababa University,
Bahir-Dar University and Haramaya Univer •ity. The range varies from none to 8in
some departments.
The major findings of the study also indicated that very few women apply to become
lecturer in the selected faculties of the three Universities. From among these already
few, veryfew pas the screening proces and join the faculty. This is mainly because
of a generally poor performance record in their under graduate studies i. e. low
CGPA at the time of graduation. The very few who make it do not advance in the
career ladder because during promotion they again fail to meet the additional
requiremets such as research output. Additionally women's low repre entation in the
interview committees has also found to be another obstacle for women candidate
who are interested to join higher institutions.
