Abstract
The main objective of this study is to investigate the practices and problems of
training programs offered by local NGOs on HWj AIDS and RH for secondary
school teachers and students and then to conclude by giving recommendations.
The study was conducted in three sub cites of Addis Ababa (Arada, Gulele and
Yeka) that were selected using cluster sampling technique taking sub-cities as
clusters. Then, from these subs cites 4 local NGOs working on HWj AIDS and
reproductive health and 6 secondary schools were selected using purposive
sampling techniques. Besides, availability sampling technique was used in
selecting trainees from all the selected secondary schools, trainers and training
officers from the sample local NGOs. Based on this, 92 trainees, 13 trainers and
4 training officers were taken as actual sources of information. Questionnaires,
interview and document analysis. were used to collect the necessary data.
Results obtained were analyzed using percentage, frequency and Chi-square.
The results of the study reveal that the sample organizations didn't assess the
training needs to the satisfactory degree due to lack of formal TNA methods. As
indicated by trainer respondents (91.7% and 83.3%), the main sources of training
needs were found to be knowledge, skills and attitude gaps of individuals and
organizational objectives respectively. Objective setting, content and method
selection did not involue trainees and other stakeholders rather it were dictated
by the trainers and training officers by considering the level of trainees, the time
given for the training and the availability of resources. Moreover the selection of
the trainers was not based on competition. The training place was appropriate for
the training in terms of facilities, arrangement and size and was far from
unwanted noises. Training evaluations, reaction level (by 88% trainees and
92.3% trainers) and learning level (by 69.6% trainees and 69.2% trainers) were
found to be made in the organizations, X2 (2,n=105)=4.046, p>0.05 and X2
(n= 105)=0.119, p>0.05 respectively. Training programs were constrained by lack
of resources. Therefore, it is recommended that local NGOs should allow the
participation of stakeholders in training activities through their representatives.
The responsible bodies have to develop the financial, manpower and material
capacity of local NGOs through training, supervision, and providing resources.
The local NGOs have to exert an effort to develop their capacity through searching
funds by preparing and arranging music, films, and theatres for the society and
by sharing experiences from other benchmarked organizations in training
activities.
