dc.description.abstractThe thesis titled "LGM School Yesterday and Today: Challenges and Perspectives" delves into the significance of learning foreign languages for personal development. The LGM, known for educating Ethiopian elites, is currently reassessing its role and influence, especially as students increasingly use English, contrasting with French, the primary language of instruction. Drawing from firsthand observations and interviews with various stakeholders, the thesis identifies a recent negative trend at LGM, characterized by declining proficiency in French and a waning interest in French education. Driven by these observations, the thesis endeavors to unearth the fundamental causes of this language preference shift, scrutinizing whether people perceive English as more approachable, whether it has gained worldwide prominence, or whether the quality of teaching at LGM is a contributing factor. The research questions aim to gauge how these developments impact the school's reputation and future trajectory. Additionally, the thesis puts forth hypotheses regarding the growing prevalence of English, fluctuations in teaching standards at LGM, and how students' familial linguistic backgrounds affect their engagement with French. Employing a diverse methodology that includes observation, interviews, and questionnaires, the study offers a comprehensive view of language practices among LGM students, informed by extensive personal experience within the school environment.
