dc.description.abstract | It is believed that the quality of classroom instruction largely determines students' achievement in the learning process. The issue of testing instructional effectiveness has been addressed by different researchers in the area of teaching in many forms and con ten ts. In view of this, the purpose of this study was to examine effective use of explanation technique by geography teachers in selected Secondary schools in Addis Ababa. To this effect, sixteen geography teachers were selected from four secondary schools in Addis Ababa. Observation checklist having various categories of explanation technique was set as the data gathering instrument. The data then procured through classroom observation and analysed using statistical methods such as percentage distribution and chi-square statistical test for these statstical method are found appropriate to the study. The results of the study revealed that the extent to which teachers use explanation was confined to presenting mere factual contents. It was also indicated that appropriate selection and use of explanation skills was not ascertained . Furthermore, teaching qual i ti es tha t encourage in tegra ti ve learning were so minimal.
