Abstract
New ionic liquids (ILs) from 1,10-Phenanthroline and 4, 4’- Bipyridine have been
synthesized. The synthetic procedure is based on the typical alkylation plus anion
methathesis steps common to commonly used ionic liquids. Optimization of the reaction
conditions allows the successful monoalkylation of both 1, 10-Phenanthroline and 4, 4’-
Bipyridine which is key for the low melting points observed. All new ionic liquids have
been fully characterized using NMR, MS and CHN microanalysis. The phase behavior
and decomposition temperatures of these ILs have been investigated using DSC and
TGA. The ionic liquids were also analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
(XPS). The binding energy data obtained in this research may find future use as a
standard list of binding energies for 1, 10-Phenanthrolinium and 4, 4’-Bipyridinium based
ionic liquids and other related compounds.
The solvent ability of these new ionic liquids was tested. Nanoparticle stabilizers such as
1, 10-Phenanthroline and its metal complexes were dissolved at high concentrations in 1,
10- Phenanthrolinium based ionic liquids and metal salts have shown very high
solubilities in 4, 4’-Bipyridinium based ionic liquids. These dissolving abilities make the
new ionic liquids very promising for applications such as catalysis, nanoparticle
synthesis, electrodeposition or metal extraction.
