Melaku Tefera Addis Ababa University, 2015 Steel is one of the major materials used all over the world in the industries and steel constructions. So the steel to be effective on the application, it should have stable mechanical properties. This paper focuses on experimental study of the effect of corrosion on mechanical properties. A steel diameter 20mm and 3500mm long steel rod; 3.5% Nacl plus distilled water (Based on ASTM G 44, G 47) and tape water for corrosive environment is taken for this experiment and studied for a period of ten days interval for fifty days by measuring weight, hardness test, impact and tensile test before and after immersion; then the weight losses, tensile test, hardness and Impact test were tabulated and analyzed graphically. The corrosion rate for group one samples is 6.432%/year and the same thing for group two samples 6.894% /year is loss. Generally it is observed that steel corroded and loss its mechanical properties; as well the different environments with decreasing intensity in the order of tape water than 3.5% Nacl plus distilled water. Based on the result when design such material for corrosive environment should consider corrosion effect or use corrosion protection mechanism.
