Abstract
The objective of this study is to explore the extent to which the teaching and learning of the writing skill is effective at Asella College of Teachers’ Training. To meet the stated objective, systematic random sampling technique was used to determine the target group from second year students taking English as a major course. The data were collected using test, questionnaire, observation, instructional material analysis, and interview. The data were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The finding of this study shows that there is a significant mismatch between what teaching and learning to write communicatively claims and what is actually done currently in the process of teaching and learning writing in the class room. Although teachers’ have awareness of the techniques of good writing, they have been found less committed to help their learners. The teaching instructional modules are not efficient and helpful. Its objectives were poorly stated and the contents were also weakly selected, organized and sequenced. As a result of these, the students’ composing skills are found very weak. However, the perception of the students about their way of learning writing and their teachers’ way of teaching is found to be odd with their actual writing performance. Finally, conclusions and recommendations were drawn from the findings and points for future research were also suggested.
