Abstract

This study assessed the nature and effect of emotional violence against grade 11thof female Students of Addis Ketema Preparatory School. In order to meet this objective, the researcher employed mixed approach methods- quantitative and qualitative methods. To select the sample researcher used probability and non probability sampling techniques. For the survey, six sections out of seventeen were selected through simple random sampling technique; and the researcher include all of 176 female students as sample but the students who returned answered paper was 140. Furthermore, purposive sampling was used to select key informants of administrative workers; besides convenience sampling technique was used for selection of the interviewees: 15 female students and two teachers (one male and one female). The finding indicate that most of the female students experience emotional violence in the classroom and in the school compound by male class mate, male teachers, female students, female teachers and administrative workers. And the type of emotional violence perpetrated in the class room and school compound can be categorized as verbal attack, humiliation, name calling and threatening. This emotional violence have a negative effect on the education of female students through decreasing their class participation, discouraging to engage in different learning activities etc. In addition, emotional violence has negative impact on the personality of female students through making them feel inferior, under estimate themselves etc. However, to avoid these problems, these students didn’t take any strong measure like reporting to school administration since the school does not have reporting mechanism and a trend before. And finally, the researcher recommended the school should provide the mechanisms that help the students report emotional violence which takes place inside the class room and in the school compound; and the government has to work on emotional violence in different direction like legal aspects because unless otherwise the source of emotional violence abolished and the perpetrator punished it is difficult to avoid it
