Abstract
This is a study on the practices of Theatre for Development
(7fD) and
its
role in educating the public with a special focus on its delivery in Debre
Markos Secondary School. The main purpose of this study was to assess
the historical development and practice of 7fD in Ethiopia; its role, its use
and acceptance on the target group of Debre Markos Secondary School
grade 10 students. The total students of grade 10, 1170 (600 females and
570 males), were taken as a case study, s ince the
7fD was shown only for
them. The sample size of the study w ere 10%, 117 (60 female and 57
male) students through purposive sampling method. Questionnaire, focus
group discussion (FGD) and interview were employed to collect the data.
Moreover, secondary data were also collected mainly from books, joumals,
magazines and internet websites so as to strengthen the study.
The data obtained were analyzed using both qualitative and quantitative
methods. After analyzing the data, the 1"esu/t of the study revealed that,
most of the respondents did not have awareness about
liked the
fD
7fD,
most of them
since it gave them two-way communication. As most
respondents responded,
7fD is an appropriate medium
in order to educate
and create awareness to the public and it is also accepted, regarding on
its use, by the public because of its edutainment and participatory
characteristics. A recommendation is made based on the findings of the
study so as to use
TFD
as a medium in order to educate the target group
about their socio-economic problem
