Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to understand the nature of teaching- learning
through plasma TV in government secondary schools. The study further examined
the functions and roles of plasma TV instruction in classrooms and its influences.
Besides, the roles of classroom teachers and the students learning situation
through plasma TV were issues addressed in the study. To achieve these
objectives, data were collected from the four purposely selected government
secondary schools of Addis Ababa through questionnaires, interviews, document
analysis and observation. The respondents were randomly selected by using
lottery method to fill the questionnaires, whereas the participants were purposely
selected on the basis of cooperativeness and experience to be interviewed. As the
study was more of qualitative approach, the data were presented and analyzed in
narrative form and those data gathered through questionnaires were analyzed
quantitatively by using percentage as statistical method in addition to my own
reflective analysis. The finding revealed that, almost all teachers and students
didn’t take training on how to use plasma TV. Most teachers and students didn’t
have positive attitude towards plasma TV. The needs of individual learner couldn’t
be addressed through plasma teaching method and it couldn’t foster students’
critical thinking and reasoning abilities. Besides, it erodes the human relation
between teachers and students. Therefore, the ministry of education, plasma TV
developers and other concerned bodies should make some sorts of modification on
the speed of transmission and on the medium of instruction. Teachers and
students need to get sufficient know-how and skills to go hand in hand with
plasma TV
