dc.description.abstract | Th e purpose ojlhis sludy was 10 underJland and assess Ih e currenl slaWs oj qualily oj educclliun fakin g inlo accounl qualily indicalors in PHEls in M ekelle. To conducl Ihis research , descriplive survey melhod was e mployed. The primary sources oj dala were 65 inslrue/ ors, 145 second and Ihird year undergraduale degree r egular program sludenls and jour academic vice deans. Purpo sive sampling, simple random sampling and slralified random sampling lec hniques were employed 10 select academic vice deans, inslruclor s and sludenls respeclively. Likewise, Ih e collecled dala were a nalyzed quanlilali ve ly by us ing descriplive and injerenlial slalislics, and qualitalively by using descriplive narralion. · Queslionnaires were Ihe 'main dafa gathering instruments while inl ervi ew, observalion and do cum enl analysis were employed 10 enrich the data gathered Ihr ough queslionnaires. The jinding oj Ih e sludy mirrors thaI th e educalional qualificalion oj ins/ruClors was below Ihe required minimum slandard 10 give instruction al degree level. The academic staffs were less qualified to conducl the teaching - learning process effectively b ec ause abolll half oj them were not acquainted with the conceplo/pedagogy, had low educational qualification and less teaching experience and lacked on Ih e job Iraining oPPo rlun il ies. Besides, th e services provided by Ihe support slOfj.i· were nm suj)7cienl e ven/hough Ihe background ojlheir s tudenls was weak. Besides. the c urricu la r mCll erials were not sujjicien/ excepl the course g uides and teachers' hand ouls 10 give quality inslruclion at degree level. Moreover, t he re was an imp lementCllion boltleneck with respect to mel h ods oj teac hing and assessment. Thus , lecture method and summative e valuation w er e the most frequently utilized methods oj teaching and assessm ent respectively. Graduate tracer studies were not succesJjully carried out by most sa mpled PHEls. From Ihe survey, the pass rale oj graduales oj PI-JEl s was g realer Ihan the rale oj employmenl. As a r esult, th e currenl status oj qllalily 0.( educati on in PHEIs in Mekelle was jound 10 be not promising when it was evalualed Fom Ih e point of input indicators, pro cess indicators and out put indicators as benchmarks oj quality oj edu calion.
