Stephania abyssinica is used in Ethiopian traditional medicine for the treatment of stomachache, headache and inflammation. The present study evaluated the 80% methanol leaf extract of S. abyssinica for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. Dried leaves of the plant were extracted using maceration technique. Antinociceptive and antinflammatory activity were evaluated using hot plate test, acetic acid induced writhing test, formalin test and carrageenan induced paw edema test. Swiss albino mice of either sex were randomly assigned into five groups of six mice each. The extract reduced the number of writhing at all doses though to a lesser extent than aspirin. Increase in latency time was observed throughout the observation time. Greater increase in latency was observed at the 30 minute and lesser on the other time intervals. In the formalin test, 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg of the extract reduced paw-licking time more significantly in the second phase. During carrageenan-induced paw edema test, paw volume was considerably decreased in the second phase. The plant extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. This study showed that the extract had potential analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. Key words: Analgesic activity, Anti- inflammatory activity, Stephania abyssinicaen_US
