Naming ceremony in traditional Oromo Society: The Case of Roset Woreda

| dc.description.abstract | This study attempts to describe the naming ceremony which is conducted in some localities of Oromia region in Boset Woreda namely Chore Kebelel the place between Adama and Wellenchiti in the East, Adulala mariam Kebelel the place between Adama and Sodere in the south, Kuriftu Kebele around Wonji and koka Kebele. It examines the contributions of naming ceremony to social interaction, to identify the role of female relatives in the naming ceremony and to discover if there is the same naming ceremony for female as well as male children. The data was collected from 4 localities using interview questions on 40 elderly people and focus group discussions held with 32 participants who are living in the stated Kebekes.Both qualitative and percentage data analysis methods were llsed in this study. The finding of the study indicates that, all types of naming Ceremony such as Gudifecha, Mogaassa, and Tuffta are practiced in Boset Woreda. The finding of the study also indicates the importance of these aspects of naming ceremonies in stTengthening socialization among parents, relatives and Ethnic groups. Finally the paper gives an over all picture of the naming ceremony and suggests that further study could be done to find out the influence of names in individual 's social interaction, self evaluation and cognitive development. | en_US |
