Abstract

Groundwater Based Irrigation Activity Is Going To Distribute In Many Part Of Ethiopia Particularly In Kobo Valley, Northern Ethiopia. However, The Ways Of Irrigation Practice In Resource Management And Monitoring Perspective For The Future Sustainability Is Very Poor. Therefore, The Aim Of The Study Is To Evaluate The Sustainability Of Ground Water Based Irrigation By Assessing The Annual Inflow Of Groundwater Using Time Independent Spatially Distributed Water Balance Model (Wetspass), And By Integrated Assessment Of Water Quality And Related Soil Chemical Characteristics. Accordingly, The Average Annual Groundwater Recharge, Surface Runoff, And Evapotranspiration Were Found To Be 83.82mm, 234.2mm And 471.7mm Respectively. Hence The Recharge Accounts 10.6% Of The Mean Annual Rainfall And The Remaining 29.6% And 59.8% Are Towards Surface Runoff And Evapotranspiration Respectively. The Irrigation Water Quality Indicator Variables Like Salinity And Sodium Adsorption Ratio Are Slightly Increasing, Specially The Former One Due To High Evaporation Process. Soil Salinity And Sodicity Are Also Increasing At Early Started Irrigation Farmland Relative To Non-Irrigated And Recently Started Irrigation Agricultural Land. Generally, Kobo Irrigation Farmland Needs A Good Monitoring And Management With Respect To Ground Water Quantity And Quality As Well As Soil Chemistry To Have A Sustainable Irrigation Practices.
