Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the academic achievement of female
students. Based on review of the related literature, basic research questions were formulated For data
gathering, both quantitative and qualitative research methods were employed The quantitative data were
obtained through questionnaire. Thefinal account of the questionnaire was administeredfor 150 grade 9
female students, 6 directors, IOfemale and 20 male teachers of the school, 8 Woreda education experts at
Ababo Guduru Woreda. The qualitative instrument constituted of document analysis and student records.
Frequency distribution and percentage have been used for data analysis. This study was conducted with
the objective of investigating the major factors affecting the academic achievement of female students' at
high school. The result of this study indicated that school related factors such lack of opportunities to
study and read in and outside the school, school costs negatively influenced parents' willingness to
educate and enhance the academic achievement of their female students, household activities, distance of
the school from their home, poverty, lack of more female teachers in school and lack of especial support
teachers give to female students and absence of concerned bodies providing different supportive trainings
and tutorial classes to promote the academic achievement of female students. In addition, socio-cultural
factors such as female students' background area, educational background of parents, the perception
towards their academic performance influencingfactor and how these affect the academic achievement of
female students
