Abstract
The performance of sugar cane bagasse boilers is commonly analyzed through the first law of thermodynamics, using the energy balance method and the fuel gross calorific value as a calculation base. This work presents a first law analysis by comparing from the two different methods: the input/output method and the energy balance method. Among the different energy losses in the boiler the contribution of the loss due to sensible heat carried away by dry flue gas is highest i.e. 10.23%. The combustion efficiency of the bagasse boiler as calculated using the energy balance method is 67.85% and it is lower than the rated efficiency of the boiler which is 72%.Energy and exergy analysis of the condensing-extraction steam turbine show that the first and second law efficiencies are 86.37% and 75.98% respectively. Moreover the influence of increasing boiler output temperature on energy and exergy efficiencies of the turbine by combusting fixed amount of bagasse at constant pressure is investigated. The result of the investigation shows that both the energy and exergy efficiencies improve at higher temperatures. KEY WORDS: Bagasse, Combustion efficiency, Exergy, Performance.
