Abstract
Water is one of the basic requirements for life, economic and social developments, it is required for human beings, animals and plants. Therefore, adequate water supply and water management are critical for the development of water needs. However, in the study area lack of water for agricultural, potable and livestock consumption during the dry month of the year is one of a concern. The objective of this research was to assess the most potential sites of rainwater harvesting in Modjo watershed in central Ethiopia using an advanced geospatial-based model that combines fuzzy logic with Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model. This technique helps to detect water harvesting sites in suitable places and to improve water resource management to resolve water shortage in the study area. The methodology adopted in this study was fuzzy logic modeling to standardize the input factor. Analytical Hierarchy Process modeling was used to drive the weight of each influential factor and weighted linear combination (WLC) technique was used to process and aggregate these factors together. Based on the literature reviewed and availability of data, ten significant layers of the study area such as rainfall, runoff depth, drainage, land-use and land-cover, slope, lithology, lineaments, proximity to road and urban were incorporated to develop the model. Results of this study revealed that rainwater harvesting potential suitability class coverage of study area was very highly suitable (18.1%), highly suitable (20.9%), moderately suitable (20.3%), low suitable (10.6%) and very low suitable (3.1%), while 26.9% of the area was covered by constraints. This research demonstrates that compatibilities of geospatial modeling to investigate the possibilities of selecting potential sites for rainwater harvesting in modjo watershed.
