Abstract

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the contents and intents of Grade 10 mathematics in Addis Ababa City Administration. In order to evaluate the contents organization (Coverage, integration and Sequence) in the syllabus and textbook, both quantitative and qualitative data were collected through content analysis and interview. Similarly, the evaluation of the intents were done by quantitative data collecting instruments (questionnaires) from 32 teachers and 224 students from the schools under study. Moreover, the data gathered from syllabus, textbook teachers and students were analyzed quantitatively. Besides, the data gathered through interview and documents were analyzed qualitatively. The result showed that the coverage of objectives (KAS), the integration and sequence of contents were not adequately treated in the communication materials to bring maximum learning on students. Regarding this, the chi-square (x2, 2,N~841) ~36.17 p <O.05 indicated that there was a very high significant difference between the number of observed frequencies and expected frequencies of the objectives developed in relation to coverage. Moreover, the integration of content did not consider the correlation of scheduling topics. Regarding intents, the result showed that, most of the teachers did not use variety of teaching methods (65% always use explanation). Most of the students were not happy in the mathematics period (68.8%) and 75% of the students did not enjoy learning mathematics through plasma and 72.3% of students were less involved in the teaching learning processes of grade 10 mathematics. In addition, the background mathematics knowledge of students took the first rank from the factor that hinder the implementation. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the coverage, integration and sequence of contents in relation to other subjects, students' psychological and behavioral changes and e ven the abstract nature of the subject itself should be considered in the preparation of the grade 10 mathematics communication materials in the forth coming edition.
