dc.description.abstract | The major purpose of this study was to assess the practice, challenges, and opportunities of parental support for children with intellectual disability at Tekelehayimanot general primary school. To achieve the stated objectives, a case study, and qualitative research design were used. Parents, teachers, counselor, and school directors were selected by available sampling technique. Interviews and focus group discussion, were used as instruments of data collection and data was audio recorded and note taken. The collected data was analyzed through description, coding and categorizing in to themes and sub themes and interpretation of the major themes were used to reach at major findings of the study. Based on the data analyzed, the researcher reach at the following major findings were identified. First, there were better parental support practice for children with intellectual disability on the ground. Such as, provision of educational materials and provide training on four basic adaptive behavioral skills. Second, lot of support practice was left to mothers and mothers have more burden than that of fathers in supporting practice. Third, with regard to the practice of supporting their children’s education and adaptive behavioral skills training development, there were lots of challenges like low economic status and large family size, low educational status, lack of training, and impact of corona virus with some opportunities to children with intellectual disability and their parents. Such as, social support, modeling, learn from other, attitudinal change towards disability and other opportunities which was important for both parents of children with intellectual disability and their children.
