Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether the predictive validity of
grade eight Primary School Leaving Certificate Regional Examination (PSLSRE)
conducted by Harari Education Bureau(HEB) scores as a whole and English
language and Mathematics scores individually predict future academic achievement
of students in Ethiopian General Secondary Education Certificate Examination
(EGSECE) administered at a national level .So this quantitative study used primary
data ,Out of 1646 student who joined the secondary school ,400 students were
randomly selected from 4 government secondary schools that satisfied certain
predetermined criteria .Statistical tools such as descriptive statistic, Pearson 's
correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis were used to study the
relationship between variables to analysis these data and postulated hypothesis
tested at 0.05 significant level. Generally the study revealed that PSLCRE mean score
is a high predictor(r=O. 602,p<0. I) of students' performance in the EGSECE CPA.
When compared individually grade 8 Mathematics and grade 8 English with EGSECE
GPA were found to have a poor predictor (but positive relationship). PSLCR.E mean
score (248 and .360 respectively .. A multiple regression analysis method was also
used to test how much predictor variables contribute in predicting the criterion
measure ,in this model summary revealed that the predictor variable were able to
explain 51.4% of the variation in EGSECE GPA. Thus, the study indicates that there
is strong positive relationship between student academic achievement of PSLCRE and
EGSECE GPA and PSLCRE is a valid instrument to measure Harari Region
student's academic success
