The purpose of this study was to survey the current practices in the reductioll of gender disparity in primary education enrolment in Oromia Regional s tare. In undertaking the study descnptive survey method was used. Two Zones (Guji and N011h Showa) from the region were fi r·st identified using purposi!'" sampling method because they are p resumed to have either wide gender disparities or lowest enrolment rate in girl's education .In order to find out Uw causes for the presumed gender gaps 16 primary schools were selected randomly from eight woredas of these z ones. Questionnaire, both st.ucturea and unstructured interview, focus-group discussion and document analysis were employed for data col/ection. The data were analyzed using percentage, gender parity index and weighted mean. Fw1her, Spearman's Rank Orde'· Correlation Coefficient and T- test were used to test the significance of the responses. The study revealed that in both zones there is an increase in enrolment in boys and girls. But the gender imbalance remains a proble1)<; i.e., compared to boys, girls have not been able to take full advantages iii access to primary education due to several socia cultural, economic and school related factors . Therefore, it can be concluded that the domina nt causes for the exis tence of gender disparity of primary education in the study area was found to be the n.egative attitudes towards girls ' education i,( society. For this, progresses towards closing the gender gap in prirr, ary education have been moderate. To alleviate the prelJailing problems by taking in to account, the specific features of zones or woredas, joint effort and active support of all members of the society, from regional and local govemmenLs down to the community level are recommended.en_US
