Although wage labour opportunities are scarce for both mean and women in Ethiopia, female participation rates remain lower than. male participation rates and females are dis-proportionately concentrated in certain occupations of the labour force . Indeed, the participation of women in all aspects of the development process is very limited. However, little is known about the factors which are responsible for such a low level of female employment in Ethiopia . To this end, this study was designed to examine the determinants of female labour force participation in urban Ethiopia using data from the 1994 Urban Household Survey. The following methodologies are employed in this study. Different estimation methods (descriptive statistics, the logit and the probit models) are used to estimate the coefficients with respect to age, education, fertility, migration status marital status, and income of household head. It is found that female lab our force participation is positively related to age, education, and migration status , where as it was negatively associated with fertility, marital status , and income of the household head. Moreover, the analysis of the determinants of Female labour force participation which employs both log it and Probit models identifies age, fertility, marital status, migration status and education as the most important Factors responsible for the low level of female participation In the work force in urban Ethiopia. Based on the findings, the study recommends that extensive Family planning programmers are necessary in. order to increase the educational status of women by releasing women from Household responsibilities associated with child bearing.en_US
