The lakes of the Main Rift Valley suffer from lake level fluctuation due to several natural and human induced factors. Lake Abiyata, a terminal lake, which is located in the central part of the main rift of Ethiopia, as many researchers testified, has a problem of level fluctuation. The natural factors that play the important role in governing the level of Lake Abiyata are inferred to be unstable climatic conditions. The industrial activities that abstract water from the lake and some land use practices also have considerable impact for the lake level fluctuation. A decision support tool has been developed in order to model the water balance of the lake and assist in determining how much water could be extracted from the lake, without affecting its equilibrium state, by observing the monthly level of the lake.
