Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the contributions of communities in improving quality of education in South West Shoa Zone of Oronia Regional state and indicates solutions to the problem identified. In addition, the study was intended to give answers to: What are the current practices, challenges, opportunities, and the possible solutions of community participation in improving quality of education to alleviate the problems of community participation in schools. For this study descriptive survey design was employed. The target population for the study were teachers, school principals, vice principals, secondary school supervisors, PTA chairpersons and woreda education office heads. Due to the small population size, principals, vice principals, supervisors, PTA chairpersons and WEO heads were drawn from eight schools by using availability sampling technique and the teachers were selected by simple random sampling technique. In this study both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. In order to collect data, questionnaires, interview and document analysis were used to collect data to answer the above research questions. The instruments were validated by advisors and experts and a pilot study was carried out and reliability coefficient of 0.77 was obtained.Data was collected both from primary and secondary sources. The primary data was obtained directly from the sample teachers, school principals and vice principals, supervisors and PTA chairpersons by using questionnaires and from woreda education office heads on using semi-structured interview. The major findings concerning the current practices of community participation in improving quality of education was not satisfactory.Regarding to the factors that affect community participation. Again, the strategies to be used by the schools and WEOs to enhance community participation in improving quality of education were found to be low. Thus, to improve the situation, allowing the community to participate actively in schools, provide adequate training to the school principals, teachers and community representatives on their roles and responsibilities, creating conducive working environment to attract the community, participating the community in planning, implementing, managing, monitoring and evaluation, participating the community representatives in decision making process and arrange appropriate time of meeting on common interest are recommended.
