dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to examine the practices of principals in facilitating teaching and learning process in secondary schools of Horo-Guduru Wollega zone, Oromia national regional state. Mixed research design was employed to attain the objective of the study. The samples included ten secondary schools of five woreds in the zone. The sources of data were secondary school teachers, principals, and supervisors. Data were collected using questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. To analyze and interpret the data, both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques were applied. The result of the study revealed that there was low degree of principals’ practice in facilitating teaching and learning due to lack of experiences and skills. Besides, school principals were less effective in providing supervisory support, in creating positive teaching learning environment they were not applying practices of effectiveness. The ineffectiveness of secondary school principals in facilitating the teaching and learning process contributed to decrease in student achievement. Based on the study results, it was recommended that principals should provide appropriate support to update their skills and be supervised from time to time to be effective in facilitating the teaching and learning process and help them to achieve the goals of school they are leading.
