dc.description.abstractThe background of this thesis is the trend of ever decreasing physical space available for antennas embedded within mobile terminals. At the same time, the antennas are increasingly required to cover a large number of separate frequency bands and/or have wideband operation. In addition, those antennas should perform sufficiently well near the user. This forms the motivation for the novel compact antenna design. The operation of the compact antennas will be based on the use of dual port monopoles on the mobile terminal. The thesis presents a design of both inverted F and Planar Inverted F Antennas to operate at Long Term Evolution (LTE) band 7 from 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz. These monopoles were on the appropriate positions especially on the corners of the mobile for maximum space optimization. The antennas were studied using parametric study approach to gain the required specifications. It is a requirement for the LTE devices to have more than one antenna element to achieve higher data rates. Hence, efforts were made to implement two antennas on the same ground plane. Since the current mobile headsets are very compact in dimension and scare space available on it, the proposed antennas were port isolated using isolation methods. The orthogonal placement of antennas resulted 8dB improvement than the parallel alignment. Using the slotted ground decoupling method, 9dB isolation was obtained than the non slotted ground planeen_US
