The Practices of Farmers Training Centers’ in Enhancing Rural Livelihoods: the Case of Dawo Woreda, Oromia Regional State

| dc.description.abstract | This study surveyed the practices of farmers’ Training centers found in Dawo Woreda. A descriptive survey design that employed both qualitative and quantitative approach was used by collecting data from 52 randomly selected households. In addition qualitative data were gathered from DAs, community elders, youth and women groups through interviews and FGDs. Frequency counts, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used as statistical tools to analyze quantitative data. The results indicated that the majority of the sample household had an experience of 5 years working with FTCs. It was found out that FTC users were satisfied by the trainings about crop production, natural resources management and animal production at different rates. The results also indicated that the majority of the users recognized to have benefited from FTCs trainings in terms of developing the culture of saving, access to market and improved knowledge on agriculture and environment. Nevertheless, most of the FTC-users evaluated the training received as irrelevant to their needs. Qualitative analysis revealed the most critical challenges of FTC were the lack of necessary resources and equipment. The study concludes that the contribution of FTCs practices on farmers’ livelihoods in the study area has both negative for landles youth and positive in improving farmers livelihood. Recommendations having implications for future interventions and research are forwarded. Key words: Farmer training centers, rural livelihood, extension, adult literacy | en_US |
