Abstract
Background: Medicine improves the quality of life and increases the improved the longevity of human
beings as it helps to fights against several diseases. Access to essential medicines is the fundamental right
of every person.
Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) demarcates the list of essential medicines (EMs), as
medicines that ―satisfy the priority health-care needs of the population.
Objective: To evaluate the logistics management system and to estimate the availability of essential drug
and wastage rate in public health facilities in Sheka Zone.
Methodology: The qualitative method was carried out. The study conducted on facility based retrospective
evaluation of availability of essential drugs in the previous one year and evaluate the current availability
status. The study analyzed using a thematic content analysis approach.
Result: According to this study also found wide variations in availability of essential drugs at the time
survey were 53.33%. Based on the store keepers response, majority 96(49.2%) of the HCFs stocked out
some essential drugs, while 115(59 %) of the HCs Bin card updated within 30 days. On the other hand
revenue lost due to expire of the drug in each health was varying and total 1,343,974ETB was notrevolving
drug funds that can potentially affect the availability of essential drugsinthepublichealthfacilityinthestudyarea.
Conclussions. Preparing written policies or guidelines regarding selection, forecasting and procurement
of essential drugs was not given attention. A major problem uniform to all the HCs was not found regarding
selection of essential drugs though each HC had its own problem in the selection of essential drugs.
The strength of DTC determined the effectiveness of the selection practice in majority of the HCs.
Generally, inadequate supply of essential drugs in PFSA affected the logistics of essential drugs with respecttomaintainingthesystemandavailabilityofessentialdrugs.
