dc.description.abstractone of the public company offering transportation services in Addis Ababa is Anbessa City Bus Service Enterprise (ACBSE). The company serves customers on more than 125 routes using a set bus schedule system. However, the company's operational performances are starting to suffer from the present bus assignment and scheduling system. The aim of this study is to use linear programming (LP) to build an optimal bus assignment mechanism. The best number of buses for each route in four shifts is found by developing the LP model following a detailed review of the current bus scheduling system. The performance of the current systems is then used to validate the LP-model's output. The study's conclusions demonstrated that, in comparison to the current scheduling system, the new model performs better in terms of operational expenses, bus utilization, trips, and distance traveled. The new technology reduces expenses while simultaneously increasing bus utilization and passenger service quality. The authors suggested that the company use the new bus assignment system so that buses could be assigned according to the passenger demand distribution for each route during a certain shift.
