Abstract

From literature review it is possible to hypothesize that a method for the preconcentration and isolation of niclosamide from indigenous plant materials using supported liquid membrane (SLM) can be developed. Neutral molecules of niclosamide can be extracted from a flowing aqueous solution to a stagnant basic acceptor solution across a liquid membrane. The efficiency of the extraction process depends on the pH values of donor and acceptor solutions, the flow rate and the carry-over (COE) effects when ordinary SLM configuration is applied. Therefore the optimization of these factors was also suggested. Comparison of simple transport and carrier-mediated mechanisms can be made; it is suggested that simple transport mechanism would be more effective. The use of hollow fiber supported liquid membrane (HFSLM) mode of extraction is also suggested for comparison purpose. The applicability of the method of extraction should be investigated by spiking analyte sample solutions to the real sample. After developing and optimizing the method, application to the extraction and determination of niclosamide from Hagenia abyssinica (koso), Glinus lotoides L. (meterre), Embelia schimperi vatue (enqoqo), and Cucurbita pepo L. (dubba) was suggested
