Stability and safety are very important issues for embankment dams built in seismic regions. Earthquakes impose additional loads on to embankment dams over those experienced under static conditions that could cause settlement and longitudinal and transverse cracking of the embankment, particularly near the crest of the dam. The main objective of this study is to conduct seismic analysis of a zoned earth dam to observe the effect of dam geometry on the amplification of ground motion within the body of the dam. This can be done using GeoStudio which is a finite element based software. A typical dam cross section with fixed slope and different geometric sizes on top of different foundations have been analyzed. Thus real earthquake records are used as input motion with varying peak ground acceleration. The results obtained from the study show that varying the geometry together with the ground motion and peak ground acceleration values have significant effect on the ground motion amplification within the dam body.en_US
