Abstract

Literary language IS not spontaneous. It involves careful creation of words and arrangement for effective communication. Stylistics, as a twentieth century phenomenon, is the study of style used in literary texts and the effect a writer wishes to communicate to the reader. The analysis is often made for the purpose of commenting on quality and meaning in a text. This thesis aims at analyzing the literary styles of four Afan aroma novels: Kuusaa Gadoo. Dhaamsa Abbaa, Godaannisa, and Gurraacha Abbayaa. The first two novels are written by Gadisa Biru and the rest are written by Dhaba Woyessa. Each of them contributed two novels to aroma prose writing. Hence, these novels are analyzed based on the major stylistic features they exhibit. It is hoped that this study serves as an input to aroma written literature. The researcher depends on literary and descriptive methods to undertake the analysis by employing a comparative approach. Besides, critical survey of library materials is made to build the related literature. The thesis has four parts. The first chapter IS the introductory part. It gives background information on the research. The second chapter is devoted to the theoretical part that deals with general consideration of stylistics. The third chapter is concerned with the major stylistic analysis and the last one presents the conclusion. The analysis has revealed that simile and personification are dominant figures of speech. Dhaba used a total of 362 similes in both novels whereas Gadisa employed only 45. Dhaba is a writer whose preference for simile is so high. He prefers to use lexical repetition and parallelism. Rhetorical questions are also used as stylistic effects in the novels. The purposes of the similes in Gadisa's novels involve thematic preoccupations. Gadisa used 115 proverbs that serve various purposes and many foreign words are used in Kuusaa Gadoo.
