The purpose of this thesis was to examine the effects of participation in physical activities on secondary school students’ academic achievements in Western Showa Zone. For this quasi-experimental study the academic achievement records of 728 secondary school students for 6 academic subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Civics were collected from Olankomi, Ginchi and Liban Mecha secondary schools. The 364 students were divided into experimental group those participating in 3 hours per week physical activity and control group those who do not. The data was analyzed quantitatively using parametric statistics such as independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA to compare the mean academic achievement of the two groups of students to see if there are differences in the mean values due to participation in physical activities. According to that, the results of this study indicates that participating in physical activities three hours per week for three months has positive effects on the students’ academic achievements. Furthermore, despite difference between schools regarding the effect of participation in physical activity, no such difference was observed between male and female students and also based on students’ age levels. This means, the three hours per week involvement in physical activity helped students to improve their academic achievement without discrimination. Based on this finding, it was recommended that physical education teachers encourage all students, female and male students alike, at all grade levels (all age) to participate in physical activity at least during the curricular time and preferably by creating opportunities outside class.
