Abstract
This study assesses the Demand and Development Trends of Private
Primary Schools in Addis Ababa .
The purpose of this study is to survey the reasons for the
re-emergence of private primary schools, scan the environment
they are working under and their institutional strength and
internal environment.
It was found that private primary schools in Addis Ababa
are attracting clients from the well to do section of the society
who can afford and is willing to pay for what it believes to be
better quality education.
These schools are currently a source of financial gain for
their owners, though it was not always the case in the last four
years for all of them.
Difficulty in land acquisition for school establishment,
neglect by the Education Bureaux and other offices, regulations
on curriculum and medium of instruction and the broad mandate
given to school parents' committees are found to be the major
problems of private primary schools in Addis Ababa.
Regulatory changes with regard to school establishment,
•land area requirements, curriculum, medium of instruction and the
role of the community are recommended to encourage those already
1hVOlved in the venture and who would invest in education .
